As for Content: I think the book is well laid out, easy to read, and the authors do a nice job of using examples to demonstrate concepts.
I think someone who has never seen Java before would be able to follow the book and learn quickly I had some experience with Java prior to working with this book. There isn't anything special or unique about the book, but it does do a nice job of going through the basics of programming in Java. In general, I find the kindle edition works well and is free of errors.
I have mainly been using this product on the kindle app for Mac on my laptop; I find this the most user friendly because the entire page can fit on the screen at once. When I am using it on an ipad, by the time I zoom in enough to read the text, it is too big for the screen so I am constantly scrolling right and left as well as up and down--I am not sure if this would be a problem for someone with normal vision.
This leads right into my other frustration with the format of this text: to increase the font size, you have to zoom in by increasing the magnification percentage of the entire page like a pdf rather than being able to actually change the font size like on other kindle books; if you were able to change the font size itself it would fix the fitting on an ipad or kindle screen problem.
Computer Science: Programming with a Purpose
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase. This book was required for a course I was taking at University. Having read the entire thing I must say, it is hands down the best programming book I've ever read! This is saying a lot as I have been through several different books. This book is the most logically arranged, comprehensive treatment of the subject I've found. The authors have a great writing style that is conversational and very easy to read. Although I read this book for school, I would highly recommend it for someone wanting to learn how to program.
Java, Java, Java: Object-Oriented Problem Solving - Open Textbook Library
Upon completing the book I was able to write a relatively advanced level GUI program in Java, with no help from another programmer! I would buy this book and read it even if it hadn't been required. One person found this helpful.
Definitely like it. With a lot of expensive books latest ones right now that I can't afford. This is the best choice.
Nice book for introduction to java. I will be using this book for Object-Oriented Java Development course. I like it. Quick shipment and conditiona as promised. But do not take this class unless you need it. Terrible class. The book was in stock and cheaper than what my son could get it from his school. It was delivered to our house very quick. It was the correct book and everything is great. What else can I say? Format: Hardcover. Most introductory books on Java are very disappointing: either they are too basic and "over-cover" basic topics to the point that they drive their readers to boredom, OR even worse for those patient readers they simply never cover important topics.
This is the first book in which you get a balanced coverage: the book covers the most important computer science topics WHILE still keeping it simple and easy-to-understand. The authors take the time to explain every single term to you, so that whether you are a pro, or an amateur you'll get it.

The beauty of it is that even if you are a pro, you won't be bored or thrown off. The reason being that organization of this book is simply perfect.
Good Job to the Dean team. A really great job! The greatest thing about this book is the relatively casual writing style and presentation. This helps the reader, especially new programmers, get past all of the technical jargon and geek-speak that pervades most of the related literature and actually learn how to program. I especially like that the book also covers the concepts of thinking algorithmically and software design and engineering. It does this at an early enough stage that good programming habits and style can be learned and instilled from the beginning.
In fact, the second chapter is algorithms and design. Whereas, in other related texts, you may see that material much later in the book, if at all. This chapter presents the concepts in pseudocode and flowcharts, so that it gets the reader used to problem solving and algorithm design independent of some particular language. Then later, chapter 8 is devoted to software engineering.
All of these concepts are presented in a straight-forward, matter-of-fact style that is easily and quickly grasped. These chapters, and their reinforcement that is throughout the rest of the book, helps beginning programmers become good developers, rather than just java coders. As far as a beginning textbook goes, this is the best that I have come across. It is not meant as a reference for Java APIs, and other advanced and specific topics though another great thing about the books is the early introduction of what APIs are and how to use them ; there are other books for that.
But it is a great book to keep as a reference for basic java and programming concepts. See all 15 reviews. Customers who bought this item also bought. Pages with related products.
